The End of an Era: Sonic Memories

Play Name That Tune

Remember these?

I remember one day JT made an announcement that he was tired of people skipping out of "National Assemblies". He said we were having one that day and that there would be "EXTRA TEACHERS IN THE PARKING LOT....SO DON'T EVEN TRY IT!" Well, having had this particular gauntlet cast at our feet, there was no other choice possible but to bail. As soon as the bell rang for the assembly, Messrs. Feger, McClanahan, and, I think, Welch, and myself, headed for the back door. You could see Wayne Bradshaw's head glistening in the sunlight, poking up between two cars. He was FOCUSED, baby. Just not quite focused in the right direction. We made it to Feger's vehicle, I think this was pre-Dodge Colt days, and piled in to the cab of his truck, fired it up, and headed off up toward the softball field. As we crossed the big ditch, we met JT in his old green and white Chevy truck, coming in the opposite direction. We waved; he waved back. He never said a word about us skipping out. Heck, I doubt he even knew who he was waving at.

How about those crazy summer days in Karen Kentner's neighborhood when we were around sixth or seventh grade?  There would be fifteen or twenty of us running from house to house with water hoses and Lord knows what else.  You'd think we invented wet t-shirts.  I can remember Monte Welch, Randy Feger, Donna Harp, Doug Harp (Class of '77), Judy Cranford (Class of '79), Judy Robbins, Karen Kentner, Deanna Strickland, Gina Corley (Class of '79), Don Farmer, Billy Fitzgerald, Kelly Mitchell, Mark Wheeler, the Taylor boys and me a couple of times. What a great childhood.

Clockwise from bottom left:  Brenda Humphrey, Barb Slone, Charlotte Brewer and Chris Carr.

One thing I remember is my first car.  Oh, how proud I was of that car.  It was a 1974 Vega station wagon that smoked like a freight train.  I was asked to wait before I pulled out in the line of cars leaving school as no one wanted to be behind me because they really wanted to be able to breath.  So, I would sit in the parking lot and let all the cars leave before I would pull out.  But, boy, did I ever love that ol' piece of junk.
