The  End of an Era

How many circles did you make around this place?  Well, it's a goner now.  Moved to the west side, like everything else.

I remember you couldn't park on the "queer" side.  Oops, not so PC?  Sue me.  I remember the #3 burger with the "smokey sauce."  And every time you pulled in there it seemed like they had raised the prices again.  Heck, even the race from school to get there and get a spot to park was fun.  "Breaker one-nine..."  And although I was a bona fide Tastee Freez (now a bank, for those who never came back) aficionado, Sonic was always a nice break.  And it was always a hoot to see some "old fart" invariably come in the wrong way.  Honk, honk.  Jeez, they had to have been at least...in their late 40s!!  Seems like I also remember Ms. Harp doing it a time or two.  To quote little Johnny Cougar:  "Oh yeah!...Life goes on..."

Too many times to count.  I remember going in the wrong way once, everyone who was with me ducked.  I also remember me and Terri Green got in trouble for stealing a tray.

It's the end of an era, kind of like the trail up the hill back of Sammy's (another icon long gone).

Another piece of the past lost, but never forgotten.  Anyone remember when Sonic was put in?  I cannot remember a time when it was not there.

Oh my, how sad.  So many memories at Sonic.  We do not have Sonics in New York!  Wahhhhh!!  But, when I get back to the Midwest, I eat at one every chance I get!

Many times for me, too.  That's where I met my wife, Sharon, and, 32 years later, we are still together.

Thanks, Sonic.

Oh, Lord, what memories that brings back.  The first one being the very first time I was allowed to drive around in town on a Friday night.  Well, I pulled into Sonic and also pulled off the side mirror of my sister's station wagon.  I had hung it on the speaker; pulled it right off.  The second one was of Charlotte and I also getting into trouble for taking a tray from Sonic.  She was such a hoot and was so scared that night.  Gosh, I miss her.

My favorite Sonic memory was when Delia and I were both grounded from our cars and so we got on her dad's riding lawnmower and drove down there from where she lived.  We drove right down the main street of Sallisaw all the way to Sonic.  We circled, pulled in, and ate...like it was normal!  There was also the time on Halloween when I was dressed like the Grim Reaper.  I parked all the way at the end, and as the girls would drive around, I would run up to their car windows and scare them.  I scared one girl (from Muldrow) so badly that she wet her pants.  I also remember the little animals and mermaids they used to give out on their drinks.

Lots of good memories driving around and around and around that old Sonic.  They made the best cherry ice ever.  The new one looks great, but just isn't the same!

I feel like I grew up at Sonic.  My very first job was working as a carhop in the 9th grade for 75 cents an hour.  Of course, later, there were the many circles around.  And the times we backed our cars in and sat on the hood, waving at everyone as they made their passes.  I used to love to drive the order takers crazy by replicating the static sound the speaker made when I was placing my order.  Every now and then, I crave a Sonic steak sandwich.  They were the best.  (I also still crave Dodson's burritos with ketchup!)

"I'll have a #2 cheeseburger, minus the onion, plus smoke sauce; an order of fries and a medium vanilla Dr. Pepper.  (Then I'll be stealing your tray to use for a rolling table later!)"

We got our first Sonic in Pennsylvania last Christmas.  It is the biggest rage.  All of my son's friends are, "Mr. Moore, this is so cool.   Have you ever seen anything like this?!"  I would hate to admit to all the "under the influence" times and ordering tater tots as tater tits, and the manager would come out to talk to us.
